How to Bulk Edit Metafields

One of the features that makes Shopify so versatile is the use of metafields. Metafields give you the ability to store extra information on your products, categories, collections, orders, blogs, and more.

Ablestar Bulk Product Editor allows you to edit your metafields in bulk as long as they are already defined in Shopify.

There are several types of Metafields you can customize in Shopify including:

Date, Weight, Product Reference, File Reference, Single Line Text, Multi Line Text, and URL.

Confirm Metafield Definitions

On installation, our app will check with Shopify to see which metafields you have defined.

You can confirm your list of metafield definitions from Shopify Settings gear icon → Custom Data → Products:

If you add or modify a metafield definition or metafield namespace in the Shopify admin, you may need to manually refresh or sync your metafield definitions.

Go to Ablestar Settings menu → Shopify data and click the 'Metafields' refresh icon.

To edit your metafields in bulk, choose if you prefer the 'In-App Edit' or 'Spreadsheet' method:

1. In-App Edits

Once you have a set of filtered products, from the 'Configure modifications' view, specify the following fields. In this example we will edit our Metafield Link called 'More data link':

  1. Field to edit: search and input the product metafield name
  2. How to edit: there could be several edit options available depending on the type of metafield you are editing
  3. Dynamic fields: specify the configuration for the type of metafield you are editing

Refer to these metafield type examples:

2. Spreadsheet Edits

Prepare your spreadsheet to include new or modified Metafield data to replace or add to existing data. Ensure that you specify a product-level identifier in the first column and the action items in the 2nd and subsequent columns.

We are able to parse these formats:

  • JSON format: using the Shopify Global ID with the metaobject handle, formatted without additional spacing, using brackets and quotes, as:["gid://shopify/Metaobject/123","gid://shopify/Metaobject/456"]
  • Comma-separated content: using no other punctuation, similar to:blue, red, yellow
Handle Color
my-product ["gid://shopify/Metaobject/123","gid://shopify/Metaobject/456"]
new-product blue,red,yellow

✅ Tips and Troubleshooting

  • Edits for metafields will take longer because they require more API calls than most other edits
  • You may need to manually refresh or sync your metafield definitions. Go to Ablestar Settings  Shopify data and click the 'Metafields' refresh icon if you are not seeing your metafields appear in the app editor.
  • Learn more about defining metafields in this Shopify article.
