Editing Images

You can bulk edit images using Shopify image URLs or Dropbox URLs for your Shopify products using Ablestar Bulk Product Editor.

Prep the Image Files

When uploading or modifying images in bulk you have two options for URL formats:

  1. Dropbox URLs: Formatted similar to
https://www.dropbox.com/s/a1b2c3d4ef5gh6/example.docx?dl=1
  1. Shopify media editor URLs: Formatted as
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0696/9622/5505/files/193c9e0a1fe5415cbe7e45034ea09317.jpg

Make sure to confirm the image URLs before uploading images:

  • Check that the image URL works on your computer in a private browsing window
  • Confirm the image URL points directly to the image, not to an HTML page containing the image

If you are able to view the images correctly on your side but they are still not uploading, it may be the remote webserver blocking automated requests for the images.

Bulk Edit Image Files

Choose if you prefer the bulk 'In-App Edits' or 'Spreadsheet' method:

1. In-App Edits

From the app editor 'Products' view, search and filter a specific set of products for editing and then click Edit products to continue:

From the 'Configure modifications' view, specify "Images" from the Field to edit picklist:

Choose your preferred How to edit option:

  • Add images to the end: if you have other existing images, it will add your new images to the end of the list
  • Add images to the beginning: if you have other existing images, it will add your new images to the beginning of the list
  • Remove first image(s): you can use just a portion of the image name, and it will remove all images with file names that include that text.
  • Remove last image(s): you can use just a portion of the image name, and it will remove all images with file names that include that text.
  • Remove image matching text: this removes exactly the image that matches the text specified

Optionally, you can click the + Add modification button to specify additional bulk edits like tags, prices or status.

2. Spreadsheet Edits

Prep your spreadsheet to include new image data using a product-level identifier (SKU, Handle, Product ID, etc) in the first column. Formatting could be similar to:

All new or modified data that is found on the spreadsheet will be processed and added to your store.

You can use a spreadsheet to add images to products only, we cannot remove images with this method.

You have two formatting options while prepping your spreadsheet:

  • Separate the image URLs into separate columns
  • Include all the URLs for the images in one column, separated by a pipe | symbol

✅ Tips and Troubleshooting

  • Skipping unchanged rows is a great way to increase the speed of the upload if your spreadsheet data has a lot of unchanged rows
