How to Search for Manual and Smart Collections

You can use Ablestar Bulk Product Editor to search for grouped products using Manual or Smart Collections on products. Common examples of collections might be a ‘Home page’ collection or a group of Memorial day promotional items.

In Shopify, Smart collections automatically group products based on pre-defined conditions, while manual collections require you to hand-pick each product that belongs in the collection:

  • Smart collections: these are dynamic and update automatically when products meet or no longer meet the criteria in the case that you want all products with ‘abc’ tag to be bucketed into the ‘abc collection’ any time they are created
  • Manual collections: any manual collection will require a manual update where the admin would specify a bulk set of products that should be in a specific collection.

How to Search and Filter Collections

From the product search view:

  • Click the ‘filter’ option
  • Enter 'collection' to start your search
  • Start typing the name of the collection to see it autopopulate:

  • Preview the populated collection items and note how different icons differentiate whether the collection is 'Smart' or 'Manual'

If a new collection is not visible that you just created, try refreshing your settings to re-sync the data. From the Bulk Editor menu: Settings → Shopify data → Collections and then click the 'Action' refresh icon

Select the collection you would like to edit and then click the Edit products button to continue modifications. In the case that both collections have the term 'new', this would be helpful to filter even further.

Duplicate Titles

In the case that your collection has duplicate titles, you have the option to search by the collection handle as well.

If you are unsure of the collection handle, you can export a copy of your data and the CSV file will have that detail noted and formatted similar to: smart-collection-hot-drops
