How To Bulk Edit Product or Variant Weight

Ablestar Bulk Product Editor allows you to bulk edit the weight of your Shopify products.

In Shopify, your products can be specified with a variety of measurements:

• Kilograms (kg)
• Grams (g)
• Ounces (oz)
• Pounds (lb)

Filters

We have specific filters to help you isolate products by weight:

• Weight: Uses the raw value of the weight as specified, without conversion. Filtering "Greater than 2" will pull up literal weights as configured so you could get a mix of all units of measurement.
• Weight (in grams): Filters and returns any unit of measurement to grams so you are able to compare unit to unit.  Filtering as 'Greater than 500 grams' will pull all existing products and measurements as grams, even if they aren't specified in grams.
• Weight Unit: Filters all products that match the exact unit of measurement specified. You can filter out all products measured as kilos or other products measured in ounces.

Note: Exported decimals could be fractions of a gram off due to conversions back and forth between weight units.

Choose if you prefer the 'In-App Edit' or 'Spreadsheet' method for your bulk edit:

1. In-App Edits

Once you have a filtered product set, from the 'Configure modifications' view update the following fields, depending on the weight option you need to change.

A. Edit the Product Weight Value

• Field to edit: input 'Weight (in product's unit)' from the suggested list
• How to edit: there are several number options to choose from. Most commonly used are "Set to fixed value" or "Set to null/blank"

Confirm the preview list of products match your criteria, click Edit filters if you need to make changes, and click Run edits to apply and process the changes.

B. Edit the Variant Weight Unit

This will swap only the unit of your existing measurement (not the value):

• Field to edit: select 'Weight Unit' from the suggested list
• Variant Weight Unit: choose any of these options:
  • Store default (lb)
  • Pounds (lb)
  • Ounces (oz)
  • Kilograms (kg)
  • Grams (g)

Confirm the preview list of products match the criteria and click Run edits to apply and process the changes.

C. Setting the Weight (in Grams)

Only used if you prefer to edit in grams (regardless of the weight unit set for each product):

• Field to edit: select 'Weight (in grams)' from the suggested list
• How to edit: choose 'Set to fixed value' for this example
• Set weight (in grams) to this value: enter the desired weight in grams. For instance, if you input 1000, and the product's weight unit is currently set pounds, it will be converted to approximately 2.2 pounds since 1000 grams equals approximately 2.2 pounds.

Confirm the preview list of products that match the criteria and click Run edits to apply and process the changes.

2. Spreadsheet Edits

Exported weights will now download without JSON formatting. This allows you to edit weight values more easily and then re-import as a bulk spreadsheet edit.

Prep your spreadsheet with a variant-level identifier in the first column and the action items in the second and subsequent columns, similar to:

The unit is not case sensitive and the space is optional, so all variations should be recognized. You can use short units like cm and lb or full names like centimeters and pounds. The JSON format still works too, so your older spreadsheets will import the same as before.

Upload the spreadsheet edit option, confirm the mapped columns and preview and click to Run edits. Undo changes if needed to start over.
