Editing Metaobject Lists

You can use Ablestar Bulk Product Editor to bulk edit metafields that point to a list of metaobjects.

Metaobjects allow you to create custom data types on your Shopify store, like authors, product guides or FAQs. You can then use metafields to link products to a list of these custom metaobjects.

Before you can bulk edit metaobjects, you need to create and define metaobjects in the Shopify admin under Content → Metaobjects view. Once your metaobject definitions are created, return to our app and choose the 'In-App Edit' or 'Spreadsheet' method:

1. In-App Edits

In this example, we are editing the metafields contained in our 'Color' metaobject definition, that we created previously. From the 'Configuration modifications' view, search for your defined metaobject (that is organized under the 'Category metafields' option):

There are several 'How to Edit' options available:

  • Set to new value: Replaces all existing metafield(s) with the new value specified.
  • Add item to the start of the list: Adds the specified metafield to the beginning of the list.
  • Add item to the end of the list: Adds the specified metafield to the end of the list.
  • Remove item(s) from the start of the list: Removes the specified metafield from the beginning of the list.
  • Remove item(s) from the end of the list: Removes the specified metafield from the end of the list.
  • Delete reference: Removes the metafield completely.

2. Spreadsheet Edits

Prepare your spreadsheet to include new or modified metafield data to replace or add to existing data. Ensure that you specify an identifier in the first column and the action items in the 2nd and subsequent columns.

We are able to parse these formats:

  • JSON format: using the Shopify Global ID with the metaobject handle, formatted without additional spacing, using brackets and quotes, as:["gid://shopify/Metaobject/123","gid://shopify/Metaobject/456]
  • Comma-separated content: using no other punctuation, similar to:blue, red, yellow
Handle Color
my-product ["gid://shopify/Metaobject/123","gid://shopify/Metaobject/456"]
new-product blue,red,yellow

💡Syncing Metaobject References

Metaobjects defined in Shopify might not be immediately visible in the Ablestar bulk editor app, as they only sync periodically.

If you recently made edits to your metaobjects and need them to appear in the 'In-App Edits' , you can sync or refresh the data manually. From Ablestar Bulk Editor dashboard:

  1. Click Settings → Shopify Data in the left menu
  2. In the table, click on the Refresh icon in the 'Metaobjects' row

If you don't see any 'Metaobjects' field in the table you may need to update the app's permissions. Check the top of the 'Shopify Data' page for a callout, prompting you to update.
