Updating Shopify App Permissions
If you have used the app for a while you may be prompted to update the app's permissions in Shopify. This article explains why it is necessary to do this, who can do this, and what could happen if you do not update the permissions.
Why do I need to update permissions?
Ablestar Bulk Product Editor needs to read and write data to Shopify in order for it to bulk update your products. When you first install the app you tell Shopify that it is okay for the app to read certain parts of your store, like your product data.
As Shopify releases new features and makes changes to their APIs we will occasionally need new permissions for the app to function. When this happens you may see a message in the app asking you, or the store owner, to update the permissions.
We've have a separate page that explains each permission we need in detail.
Who can updated the permissions for a store?
Not every user who has access to a Shopify store can accept the new permissions on behalf of the store. Only the store owner or users with the 'Manage and install apps and channels' permission can accept the new permissions.
As a store admin, you can view and modify these settings in Shopify Admin by:
- Going to Settings -> Users and permissions
- Clicking on the user you wan to view
- Scrolling down to the 'App permissions' section
What happens if I don't update the permissions?
Besides not being able to access newer features, not updating the permissions may make it harder to open the app in the future.
We will be switching the way the app is installed to what Shopify calls "managed installation". This has several benefits including faster load times but one requirement is that all stores have the same set of Shopify permissions granted to the app.
After the switch to managed installation, Shopify will prompt you to accept the new permissions when you try to open the app. If you are a store owner this will just need an extra click however it gets more complicated with staff accounts that are not allowed to update permissions for your store.
In this case a staff account will not be able to access the store until the store owner, or someone with sufficient access, accepts the new permissions. We know that lots of stores have several people working in the the app daily. We want to get ahead of this problem by updating the permissions before we make the switch to Shopify's new managed installation.
Please contact us if you have any further questions about the permissions we require or Shopify's managed installation.
