Editing File Reference Metafields

You can use Ablestar Bulk Product Editor to modify File Reference Metafields in bulk. File Reference Metafields allow you to link your product to specific files like images, videos or PDFs.

Choose if you prefer the 'In-App Edit' or 'Spreadsheet' method:

Before you begin, confirm your File metafields are configured from the Shopify 'Settings' (gear icon) → Metafields and metaobjects menu → Products settings

1. In-App Edits

Once your data set is filtered, choose between a single File or File List on the 'Field to edit' dropdown:

Single File:

From the 'Configuration modifications' view, search and input 'File' for the File or Single file option, choose which 'How to edit' option you need and then enter the URL (or Browse files to search):

  • Set file
  • Delete metafield

File List:

If you select 'File List', you have a different set of choices on the 'How to edit' field and then enter the list of URLs (or Browse files to search):

  • Set to new value
  • Add file to the start of the list
  • Add file to the end of the list
  • Remove file(s) from the start of the list
  • Remove file(s) from the end of the list
  • Delete metafield

2. Spreadsheet Edits

Use a spreadsheet layout to edit in bulk, using these file formats as reference:

Both image and PDF file formats are accepted:

  • File name:example.jpg or example.pdf
  • URL:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0111/2222/2222/files/example.jpg?v=1759860081
  • GID for the file: formatted as gid://shopify/MediaImage/123 or shopify/MediaImage/123

To include multiple files just separate them by commas. Example: .jpg,cat.jpg,dog.jpg

If you use a file name or a 'cdn.shopify.com' URL from your own store, the app will connect the file reference to that existing file. Otherwise, the app will upload the provided URL to your files section and link the product to that new file.

This also works for list.file_reference     metafields.
