How to Resolve Large File Size Issue due to Blank Rows in Spreadsheets

When using Ablestar Bulk Product Editor, some users may encounter an issue where uploading a seemingly small spreadsheet file results in extended processing times or timeouts.

This problem is often caused by the presence of hundreds of blank rows within the file. Despite these rows being empty, they still occupy file space, leading to inflated file sizes.

You can significantly reduce the file size and improve the performance of the app by removing blank rows.

1. Find Blank Rows

First identify if your spreadsheet has excessive blank rows:

  1. Open the file in a spreadsheet editor.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the sheet with the scroll bar.
  3. Note number of blank rows after your last row of filled data.

2. Remove Excessive Rows

Highlight the row just below the actual data in your spreadsheet. Depending on your operating system, you can use shortcuts:

  • Mac keyboard: click Shift + Command + down arrow and all empty rows will be highlighted. Right-click to delete all empty rows.
  • Windows keyboard: click Shift + Windows button + down arrow and all empty rows will be highlighted. Right-click to delete all empty rows.
  • With mouse (both Mac and Windows):
    • Hold down the Shift key
    • Using the scroll bar, scroll down to the end of the spreadsheet (while continually holding down the Shift key)
    • Click on the very last blank row of the file and all empty rows will be highlighted
    • Right-click to delete all empty rows
